The Russian government has confirmed that Vladimir Putin will officially meet with US President Donald Trump. The date and place of the meeting has already been chosen by the two countries, but has not yet been released. The event is expected to take place in the coming days.
“Parties are starting preparations for this important meeting directly, and it’s hard to say how many days the preparation will take. But the option of holding a meeting next week has been considered, and we are quite optimistic about this option,” Russian state agency Tass.
The suggestion of a meeting between the two presidents took place on Wednesday (6), during a meeting between Putin and Steve Witkoff, a special sent from the United States for external affairs. Witkoff also suggested that Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky also attend the meeting as reported by Russian government advisor Yuri Ushakov. Russia did not comment on the option.
The Russian press defined the meeting as “professional and constructive”, and added that both parties can be satisfied with the result of the conversation. Kremlin has already begun to inform friends and partners about the results of the meeting as a way to find a resolution.
The summit between the two countries will be first since June 2021, when the then US president, Joe Biden, met Vladimir Putin in Geneva, Switzerland. Since taking over the White House in January this year, Donald Trump has been working to improve relations with Russia, something that was harmed after the country invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
Another Trump proposal during the 2024 election campaign was the end in the Eastern European war. The Republican has already held several ultimatums for Russia to stop bombings against Ukrainian territory and open conversations for a ceasefire, something that was answered by Moscow with more large-scale attacks, including a record number of drones and missiles.
This time, the US president handed over a new ultimatum to Kremlin, demanding that Putin put an end to the conflict until this Friday (8). If the order is not accepted, Donald Trump has promised to increase the number of tariffs, as well as secondary sanctions that may affect countries that buy russian energy sources.
