Submarines from Russia and China performed first joint patrol in the Pacific, after combined exercises combined in the Japan Sea in early August.
The operation involved the Diesel-Electric Submarine Volkhov of the Pacific Russian fleet, and a Popular Liberation Army Navy vessel, traveling about 2,000 nautical miles before returning to Vladivostok base.

The exercises, called “maritime-2025 interaction”, included anti-submarine maneuvers, air defense and artillery shots, also involving surface ships and helicopters of both marine. According to China, the action aimed to protect strategic sea routes and face threats to security in the Western Pacific, reinforcing military coordination between the two countries.
This patrol is part of an annual series started in 2021 and occurs amid strengthening the “boundless” strategic partnership between Russia and China, declared in 2022. Joint operations have expanded, including Arctic and Strategic Air patrols in Pacific, reflecting the growing military ambitions of Beijing and Moscow in the region.
