A survey conducted by the Chicago Global Affairs Council indicates that Republicans’ support for the Ukrainian cause has been increasing over the past few months as US President Donald Trump assists the European country with military help and economic assistance.
The survey, released before the summit between the White House head and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, shows that since March republicans support for his country providing military aid to Ukraine grew 21%, and support for economic aid increased by 9%.
Now, most republicans, that is, 51%, believe that the US should provide military aid to Ukraine, as well as 62% of Americans in general.
About Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky: 40% of Republicans have a favorable view of the agent, as are 60% of Americans.
When asked about sanctions to Russia and US citizens’ view of dictator Putin, the opinion is more unanimous: 74% of Republicans are in favor of increasing economic and diplomatic sanctions to Moscow.
Already, only 14% of Americans have a positive view of Putin, as are 10% of Americans.
The Chicago Global Council of Global Affairs survey, conducted online between 18 and 30 July, consulted 2,148 adults across the country. Its margin of error is 2.2%.
Another research, now conducted by the Pew Research Center, also indicates a growth in republican support to Ukraine. According to this study, the part of President Trump party members who believe the US has the responsibility to help the Ukrainian government increased 12 percentage points between March and August 2025, reaching 35%.
Regarding the percentage of republicans who think the US gives excessive support to Ukraine, the total has dropped from 47% to 30% in the same period.
Last Friday (15), Trump and Putin held a historic summit in Alaska to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine. Although the meeting did not end in a temporary ceasefire agreement, the White House chief celebrated the meeting.
Next Monday (18), Trump will receive Zelensky and other European leaders in Washington.
