Image of jellyfish in the waters of the port of Trieste, Italy. Reproduction The Severeline Plant, the largest nuclear center in France and all of Western Europe, paralyzed its activities on Monday (11) due to the “massive presence” of jellyfish, according to the Esi group, responsible for the station. Four of the six reactors of the plant were automatically turned off due to the presence of animals. The other two were already out of service due to maintenance. According to EDF, jellyfish entered the water pumping stations that cool the reactors, which makes the plants automatically turned off to avoid the risk of overheating. The stoppages of units 2, 3, 4 and 6 “had no consequences in the safety of facilities, staff or in the environment,” said the EDF group on their website. According to the company, the first three were interrupted between 23h00 (18h in Brasilia) and midnight on Sunday, “according to the security and protection devices of the reactor”, and 6, at 6:20 am on Monday. “The central teams are mobilized and currently perform the diagnoses and interventions necessary to be able to restart production units with total security,” he added. SOURDERLINES, the largest power nuclear plant in Western Europe, has six 900 MW reactors and is expected to house two EPR2 reactors of 1,600 MW each, from 2040.
