Opposition parliamentarians increased pressure on Senate President David Alcolumbre (Union-AP) to accelerate the vote of projects that limit the powers of the Supreme Court (STF) ministers over congressmen. The movement gained strength after Senator Marcos do Val (Somos-ES) submitted to the use of an electronic anklet by determination of Minister Alexandre de Moraes.
In a joint note, opposition deputies stated
“The measure compromises the full exercise of the mandate of an elected representative, affecting not only his personal performance, but also the Senate authority as a democratic institution,” the deputies wrote in the note.
The parliamentarians also argue that Val was not even denounced by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) and is being the subject of a confidential investigation, supposedly motivated by criticism and opinions, which would be protected by parliamentary immunity guaranteed in the Federal Constitution.
The opposition said it will request an institutional alcohubre position in view of what they classify as “repeated abuses of authority committed by Minister Alexandre de Moraes.”
On the morning of Monday (4), Senator Marcos do Val was the target of an operation of the Federal Police (PF) when landing at Brasilia International Airport. Although there is an order from the Supreme Court to deliver their passports, the parliamentarian remained ten days in the United States, breaking the precautionary measure.
In a statement, the Somado Bench in the Federal Senate expressed support to Marcos do Val and repudiated the precautionary measures imposed by Alexandre de Moraes. The party said it follows the case closely and defended respect for parliamentary prerogatives.
