Meloni approves changes in gender transition from minors

by Marcelo Moreira

The Italian Prime Minister’s Office, Giorgia Meloni, approved on Tuesday (5) a bill presented by the Ministries of Health and family to regulate the access of minors to gender transition drugs.

The article will now be debated and voted in the Italian Parliament. Meloni management argued in a statement that changes are needed “to protect health from minors” and create “effective data monitoring” and “correct use of these medicines”.

According to information from the Ansa Agency, the bill provides for the creation of a registration with the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA, in the acronym in Italian) to monitor the use of hormones and puberty blockers in gender transitional treatments between 18 years old.

Registration will be used for the prescription of these drugs, which will be delivered only to hospital pharmacies and with permission of the National Committee of Pediatric Ethics, following protocols from the Ministry of Health.

In an interview with Reuters, Roberta Parigiani, spokesman for the Italian trans identity movement, criticized the bill.

“This is a way of categorizing trans people, with all your confidential data, in the hands of a government -nominated agency. It’s extremely serious,” he said.
