Lula gathers STF ministers at dinner at Alvorada in a gesture of support to Alexandre de Moraes

by Marcelo Moreira

President Lula received, on the night of Thursday (31), ministers of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) for a dinner at the Palace of Dawn. The meeting was marked by statements to support the Court and Minister Alexandre de Moraes, a recent target of sanctions announced by the United States government.

According to sources of the government and the judiciary, dinner had a tone of institutional solidarity and reaffirmation of Brazilian sovereignty. The meeting was attended by ministers Alexandre de Moraes, Cristiano Zanin, Edson Fachin, Gilmar Mendes, Flávio Dino and the president of the STF, Luis Roberto Barroso.

In addition to the magistrates, the Minister of Justice, Ricardo Lewandowski, Union Attorney General Jorge Messias, and the Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet were also present.

According to interlocutors who accompanied the meeting, Moraes claimed to be “quiet” and ensured that he will normally continue his work ahead of the processes under his responsibility. The minister was the target of financial sanctions imposed by US authorities, who accuse him of alleged abuse related to the conduct of investigations against allies of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

During dinner, President Lula reinforced his commitment to the independence of powers and stressed that the imposition of commercial tariffs by former President Donald Trump is being treated by diplomatic roads. The petista also positioned himself against any attempt of external interference in Brazilian institutions.

All 11 STF ministers were invited to dinner, but not everyone could attend to be out of Brasilia. The meeting lasted about two hours.

The expectation is that, with the resumption of work in the Supreme, the discourses in defense of democracy and the performance of the judiciary gain even more prominence in the coming days.
