A 71-year-old Jewish elderly woman was stabbed last Wednesday (27) in a supermarket in Ottawa, the capital of Canada, by a man with a long history of anti-Semitism on social networks.
According to Ottawa police, the victim was in the establishment with a large portion of Kosher food (Jewish) accompanied by a friend when he was approached by the man who stabbed her. Last Thursday the authorities confirmed that both the assaulted and the perpetrator did not know each other.
After suffering the attack, the elderly woman was rescued by supermarket employees, taken to the hospital by paramedics and later released.
The man, identified as Joseph Rooke, was arrested by police at the scene of the crime and accused of aggravated aggression and possession of a dangerous weapon.
Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe on social networks said “deeply sad and distressed to learn of the unjustified attack” to the elderly woman and said she was in contact with “members of the victim’s family and leaders of the local Jewish community.
“This disgusting violence has understandably caused great anguish in the Ottawa Jewish community. [..] We must unite against violence and hatred in all its forms and continue working together to ensure that Ottawa remains a safe and inclusive city for all. My thoughts are with the victim and his loved ones, and me with the community to wish her a complete and quick recovery, “he added.
The Center for Israel and Jewish affairs and the Canada B’nai B’nai, two active organs to combat Jewish hatred in the country, claimed that the reason for the attack was anti -Semitism, pointing to posts on a social network account allegedly owned by Rooke as proof.
“I am anti -Semitic and atheist,” said the aggressor on the networks on July 1, detailing his hatred for Israel and Judaism as “the oldest worship in the world.”
