At the gates of celebrating his centenary, Lufthansa has concluded the restoration of one of the most emblematic aircraft in the company’s history: the Lockheed L-1649A Starlinerknown as “Super Star.” Built at the end of the 1950s and derived from the L-1049 Super Constellation, the aircraft was completely revitalized at the Lufthansa Technik base, in Hamburg, and the historical painting-silver fuselage and blue strip with yellow edge-that marked its operation in the 1950s.
The painting process was carried out at the Münster -OSnabrück (FMO) International Airport by Altitude Paint Services (APS), with the support of the Hamburgos Mankiewicz manufacturer, which supplied 500 liters of special paint for the restoration.
Next week, the Starliner will be transported to the Frankfurt airport. From the spring of 2026, it will be the central piece of the new Visitors and Conferences Center of the Lufthansa Group, exposed next to the historic Junkers Ju 52 D-Aqui.
The restored aircraft is one of only four L-1649a preserved of the 45 built. Interestingly, you will receive the D-ALAN registration, the same as a Starliner who effectively flew in the Lufthansa fleet. The original copy with that code is still preserved in the Fantasy of Flight Museum, in Florida (USA).
