After resuming the command of the Board of Directors of the House of Representatives, the president of the House, Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB), said on Wednesday night (6) that democracy “cannot be negotiated”. The pronouncement was made when the plenary was vacated by opposition parliamentarians, who protested against the house arrest of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
“We cannot let personal and even electoral projects be ahead of what is greater than all of us: our people,” said Motta
In his speech, the president pointed out that his presence at the table sought to reaffirm the authority of the chairman of the House and strengthen the institutional function of the house. “Perhaps, at this moment, we are occupying one of the most challenging chairs in the country, for the moment we are living, for what, without a doubt, has always been and always will be: the house of the debate,” he said. He concluded the statement defending dialogue as a means to build legitimate political solutions.
Negotiations
During the occupation, which prevented sessions since Tuesday (5), the mayor threatened to suspend the term of office of deputies who insisted on obstructing the work. Mota also determined the closure of access to the plenary and positioned the Legislative Police at the door. In trying to open the session, the president was initially prevented from sitting in the chair of the presidency. Deputy Marcel Van Hattem (Novo – RS), who was at the scene, barred Hugo Motta. After brief tension and negotiations, the parliamentarian gave the space.
