A US Army base in Georgia was the target of a gunfire on Wednesday (6). According to a statement on Fort Stewart’s official Facebook profile, there are at least five wounded soldiers to date.
Fort Stewart Hunter’s military air camp added that there is no more active threat on site and the victims received initial treatment and were transported to the Winn Military Hospital.
The FBI informed this afternoon that it is acting in the case. Tony Thomas, from the FBI Department of Public Relations in Atlanta, told the CNN that the federal agency is responding to the situation of the shooter on site. He added that the operation is coordinated with the Army Criminal Investigation Division.
The department of alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives is also responding to the episode, the agency said at X.
The US Army base trains and mobilizes active units and the Army Reserve and houses the 3rd Infantry Division. It is located about 64 kilometers southwest of Savannah, Georgia.
At X, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp lamented the shooting and said he is in direct and constant contact with the police authorities.
“As we maintain close contact with police authorities on the field, Marty, the girls and I are sad about today’s tragedy in FT. Stewart. We keep the victims, their families and all those who serve the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask Georgians everywhere to do the same,” he wrote.
White House Secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Donald Trump was informed about the shooting at the Fort Stewart military base. “The White House is monitoring the situation,” he wrote in X.
