The federal government has decided not to announce, for now, no measure against the tariff imposed by the United States, articulated by President Donald Trump. The strategy is to wait for the restoration of the work at the National Congress, next Monday (4), to build a joint reaction with the support of parliamentarians.
The increase in tariffs is scheduled to take effect on Wednesday (6), and reaches strategic products of the Brazilian economy. Given the severity of the impact, the government prepares a contingency plan that will be presented to the Legislature leaders as soon as the legislative semester is reopened.
The expectation is to rely on the political reinforcement of central figures of Congress, such as Mayor Hugo Motta and Senate President David Alcolumbre. Both should play a key role in mediation between the executive, the productive sector and the thematic countertops most affected by US commercial measures.
There are currently doubts about the best legal and diplomatic path to follow. The economic reciprocity law, which authorizes Brazil to retaliate in the same proportion, is under analysis, but its immediate application is still seen with caution by members of the economic team.
The contingency plan should be presented and should already count on changes to help the Brazilian economy sectors that have entered the super tax list.
