Farc crackers have attacked a river patrol vessel from the Colombian fleet using a drone on the San Juan del Miquay River in the Cauca Department.
The drone hit the stern on the vessel, but caused no injured or structural damage. This type of air technology attack is unusual among illegal armed groups in the region.
Farc was originally a Marxist-Leninist guerrilla group who waged a long-standing war against the Colombian government but became a political party after the 2016 peace agreement. However, some militants rejected the agreement and formed fractions behind criminal acts such as illegal mining and attacks, including the recent drone attack against the navy.
To counter these threats, the Colombian navy has intensified its operations on the region’s strategic rivers and uses specialized units such as the 42nd marine infantry battalion operating both on land and at sea. In addition, the United States is expected to strengthen Colombia’s maritime capacity by transferring three patrol vessels of the Island class to the local fleet later this year.
