Fachin assumes presidency of the STF and Moraes will be vice

by Marcelo Moreira

Minister Edson Fachin was officially confirmed as president of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) by the current president, Luis Roberto Barroso, on Wednesday (13). Alexandre de Moraes will assume as vice president of the Court.

Fachin will command the Supreme Court until 2027 and will also preside over the National Council of Justice (CNJ). The inauguration is scheduled for September 29, when Barroso will leave the position. More than 1,000 guests should attend the ceremony, which will be security reinforcement in the Três Powers Square in Brasilia.

The election followed the tradition of the court, which chooses the oldest minister who has not yet chaired the court. The vote between the 11 members is secret but symbolic.

Fachin has held the position of Vice-President of the Supreme Court since 2015 and will assume the administrative and institutional leadership of the Court. Moraes, as vice president, will have an active role in the management of the court and in the conduct of sessions, ensuring support to the new presidency.

On Tuesday (12), during an event at CNJ, Fachin commented on the current challenges of the Brazilian judiciary. He highlighted international criticism and attacks on judicial independence. The minister warned of attempts to weaken human rights norms and called for commitment from all agents of the Justice System in defending and promoting these rights.

“We live in times of apprehension, with attempts of democratic erosion, and with attacks on judicial independence in the Americas,” said Fachin.
