The European Union (EU) has scheduled an emergency meeting for this Monday (11) to determine a strategy against the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin. The summit between the two heads of state is scheduled to take place this Friday (15), in Alaska, focusing on discussing a possible outcome for the war in Ukraine.
The European meeting will take place by video conferencing, and is expected to bring together the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Bloc member countries, as well as Ukraine representative Andrii Sibiga. The event is viewed as a form of the European Union to establish a united front in support of the Kiev government to try to influence the negotiations between Trump and Putin.
The meeting between the leaders of two of the world’s main powers was established after the White House sent an ultimatum to Kremlin, demanding that Russia arrived in a ceasefire agreement in the Ukrainian territory until last Friday (8). The Washington government had promised the application of severe sanctions as well as secondary tariffs. However, Vladimir Putin’s government did not respect the American order, and continued to attack this weekend.
Now the two heads of state will be face to discuss a possible agreement that, according to Trump, could involve territory exchanges to end the conflict, which has left thousands of dead in both countries for more than three years. The presence of Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky has not yet been confirmed for the event, given that Putin said he would only meet the Ukrainian with a very well defined agenda, with staff and pre-affairs determined in advance.
On the other hand, US ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, said Zelensky’s presence in negotiations is still possible. The head of European Union Diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, said that “any agreement between the United States and Russia should include Ukraine and the EU, as this is a security issue for Ukraine and throughout Europe.”
