European Commission Chairman Von Der Leyen, and other European leaders will travel to Washington on Monday along with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky to meet with US President Donald Trump.
“This afternoon I will welcome (Zelensky) in Brussels. Together, we will participate in the volunteer coalition,” said Von Der Leyen in a message on social networks, adding that “at the request of President Zelensky, I will join the meeting with President Trump and other European leaders in the White House.”
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz; French President Emmanuel Macron; British Prime Minister Keir Strmer; The Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni; Finnish President Alexander Stubb; and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte also confirmed their presence at the White House meeting.
Prior to the trip, Von Der Leyen and Zelensky will attend a video conferencing meeting on Sunday from Brussels, with the leaders of the Allied countries of Ukraine, united in the so -called volunteer coalition.
The Ukrainian President announced after the bilateral summit in Alaska between Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, who will travel to Washington on Monday at the American invitation to discuss with him “all the details about how to end the killing and war.”
The purpose of the trip is to find out in detail about last Friday’s conversations between Trump and Putin. What is known so far has aroused skepticism in Ukraine and several European capitals.
European leaders, along with Von Der Leyen, said on Saturday in a joint statement that they are “willing to collaborate” in the realization of a trilateral summit between Ukraine, Russia and the US, but warned that Moscow cannot veto the way from Kiev to the European Union and that “it will be up to Ukraine to make decisions about their territory.”
The statement includes the signatures of political leaders in France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Finland and Poland
