Cubans who worked at Mais Doctors ask Trump

by Marcelo Moreira

Donald Trump management revoked on Wednesday (13) US visas from civil servants from Cuba and other countries, including two former member of the Ministry of Health of former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff (2011-2016), due to the submission of Cuban doctors to work in other nations.

Since 2018, a lawsuit against the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO, which is headquartered in Washington), presented by four Cuban doctors who worked in Brazil in the Mais Médicos program.

“Doctors had no choice but to go to Brazil; their documents were confiscated and their circulation was limited in Brazil; they were forced to indoctrinate the local population; their relatives were held hostage in Cuba; they were watched 24 hours a day, by Cuban intelligence agents employed by PAHO; He stated in a statement to the Foundation for Human Rights in Cuba.

According to the NGO, between 2013 and 2018, Brazil paid PAHO US $ 2.58 billion for the work of more than 10,000 Cuban professionals within Mais Médicos.

PAHO, arm of the World Health Organization (WHO) to the Americas, sent at least $ 2.3 billion to Havana and got 5% of the total; The doctors received less than 10% of the total amount paid by Brazil for their services, reported the Foundation for Human Rights in Cuba.

In June, the NGO asked the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to revoke the immunity of PAH members linked to Mais Médicos – a 2022 court decision determined that the organization could be prosecuted on accusations related to the case, but PAPs appealed based on the International Organization Immunity Law (IOIA) and a 1960 executive order of then President Dwight Eisenkower, which gives the entity the status of international organization.

However, the Foundation for Human Rights in Cuba recalled that Ioia establishes that the president of the United States is allowed to remove, modify or revoke the immunity of an organization and that the request of doctors and its supporters concerns only actions resulting or related to the More Doctors program.
