The negotiations for the creation of a global treaty ended without agreement to limit production and establish rules for plastic disposal and recycling. Leaders from 185 countries gathered this week to discuss the agenda at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
The discussion began in 2022 in Uruguay, and was resumed with the expectation that the nations would reach a consensus. The work should have ended this Thursday (14), but continued until the dawn of this Friday (15).
The main impasse for the creation of the treaty happened because of the oil -producing nations, a material used for the production of plastic. Countries required a more restricted focus on waste, not want a limitation on production.
According to information released by the UN, more than 400 million tons of plastic are produced globally, with majority being destined for disposable items. Also according to the agency 15% of waste are collected for recycling, but only 9% are used, with the remainder being discarded incorrectly.
Another survey points out that almost half of the plastic ends up in landfills, while 17% are incinerated, and 22% are transformed into garbage. The UN head responsible for the negotiations said she was disappointed by the lack of consensus, but promised that the work will continue to make a possible agreement articulated.
