In the morning, Colombian President Gustavo Petro said in a publication on social network X that Peru had appropriated the area and violated a treaty that defines the border between the two countries. “Islands arose north of the current deepest line, and the government of Peru has just appropriated them through a law, besides installing the capital of a municipality on a land that, according to the treaty, belongs to Colombia,” he wrote. “The Colombian government will use, first and foremost, the diplomatic channels to defend national sovereignty,” he added. In a statement, Colombia’s Chancellery argued that the island came naturally in the course of the Amazon River after the signing of the border treaty and that its designation should be debated between the two countries.
