China has positioned five Rompigchiaccio near Alaska, in international waters, to monitor the activities of the United States, according to a report of The War Zone.
The presence of Chinese ships pushed the US coast guard to start constant surveillance in the region. In recent months, Chinese ships have been sighted in different areas of the Arctic, taking advantage of the dissolution of the ice to explore new strategic maritime routes, such as the route of the North Sea, which significantly reduces the journey between Asia and Europe.
This movement highlights the disparity of naval capacity between the United States, China and Russia in the Arctic. Currently, the US has only two operating breakers in the region, while China already has five and Russia dozens. After almost five decades without building new breeds, the United States plans to update their fleet only starting from 2029, which puts them in disadvantage in the growing competition for the control and exploitation of the polar area.
To deal with this deficiency, the United States, in collaboration with Canada and Finland, formed theIcebreaker Collaboration Effort (ICE Pact)an agreement for the exchange of information, training and incentive to the joint purchase of the Rompigias produced in these countries. Recently, the main naval construction sites of these nations have announced an alliance to accelerate the construction of new ships, including the first heavy breach ordered by the United States Coast Guard in 50 years, which will be built by Bollinger Shipyards in Seattle.
