This week begins with the expectation of the latest decisions of the Brazilian government in the face of the tariff package imposed by the United States, which comes into force on Wednesday (6). Brazilian authorities are still negotiating to broaden the list of exceptions to the so -called “tariff”, which currently covers almost 700 products.
Despite the ongoing technical conversations, the possibility of a call between President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and former US President Donald Trump, who leads the republican plate in the US presidential elections. However, sources of Brazilian diplomacy consider that a direct dialogue would require careful technical preparation, which makes the connection unlikely at this time.
Currently, about 35% of items exported by Brazil to the United States are subject to surcharge, affecting various sectors of the national economy.
During a speech on Sunday (3), Lula acknowledged that negotiations require caution. “There is a limit on the fight with the United States,” he said. The president also criticized external pressures and defended the sovereign stance of Brazil. “There are people who are scared when Brazil imposes themselves. It’s because they think they send it in the world,” he said, not directly mentioning Trump.
The Brazilian government seeks to preserve the space for dialogue, while trying to mitigate the economic effects of US unilateral measures.
