Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said on Thursday (7) US President Donald Trump to the Nobel Peace Prize. The Cambojan leader sent a letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee highlighting the “historical” role of the president in the mediation of ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, after the conflict on the border of the two countries occurred at the end of July.
In July, Cambodian and Thai troops faced each other for five days at the border, resulting in the deaths of more than 30 people and the displacement of about 300,000 civilians, according to official information conveyed by the international media. According to Hun Manet, it was the direct intervention of the US President who avoided a higher tragedy.
Trump’s ceasefire was announced on July 28, after negotiations involving the two governments and direct dialogue of the president.
“This is just an example of President Trump’s exceptional achievements in reducing tensions in some of the world’s most volatile regions. His constant search for peace through diplomacy is perfectly aligned with Alfred Nobel’s view – honoring those who made remarkable contributions to international brotherhood and the advancement of peace,” Hun Manet said,
The Cambodian Premier’s initiative marks another chapter following indications received by Trump this year. The name of the president of the United States had already been nominated for the Nobel Peace Nobel Prize by authorities of Israel and Pakistan, in recognition of what they classify as “decisive efforts in containing conflict in strategic regions of the world.”
This year’s Nobel Peace Prize is due to be announced in October.
