Vice President and Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC), Geraldo Alckmin, met on Thursday (7) with the US Embassy Business in Brazil, Gabriel Escobar. The meeting took place outside the agenda and at the ministry building in Brasilia.
The content of the conversation, which occurred the day after the entry into force of the 50% rate on imported Brazilian products, was not detailed by the folder or the US embassy. MDIC reported that the meeting dealt with bilateral relations between Brazil and the United States.
Amid negotiations on the tariff, Escobar is the main interlocutor of the US government in Brazil. After Elizabeth Bagley’s departure, Donald Trump’s government has not yet designated a Brazilian ambassador to the country.
In recent days, the federal government is finalizing the contingency plan to assist the sectors of the national economy affected by the rates. According to MDIC, the maximum rate of 50% affects 35.9% of sales of Brazilian products to the United States, and 44.6% are on the list of exceptions and continue to pay 10% tariff. The date of presentation of the Provisional Measure has not yet been announced.
Before meeting with Alckmin, Escobar met with the president of the Senate Foreign Relations Commission, Nelsinho Trad (PSD-MS). After leaving the ministry, the American business officer was in the House of Representatives.
