AGU reacts criticism from the US and defends Brazil’s performance in human rights

by Marcelo Moreira

The Attorney General of the Union (AGU) released on Tuesday (12) a note in response to the Human Rights report presented by the United States Government.

The US document states that the human rights situation in Brazil “deteriorated” and criticizes President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT), the Supreme Court Minister (STF) Alexandre de Moraes and the arrest of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) supporters.

In the note, AGU stated that a government committed to democracy “punishes coup attempts with the rigor of the law and that a government that respects human rights is” a government that recognizes the jurisdiction of international courts and actively contributes to them. “

The text also states that a constitutional democracy “does not confuse independent actions of the judiciary with the executive” and that “no attacks on the rule of law cannot be belittled.”

Itamaraty and the Supreme Court have not yet commented on the content of the report.
