Between January and March 2025, 536 unidentified drones were flying over Germany, especially in areas close to military facilities and critical infrastructure, such as liquefied natural gas terminals and civil airports.
Most of these appearances occurred at night, especially between 18h and 6h, especially regions such as Wilhelmshaven’s naval base and Ramstein air base, where up to 15 drones were seen simultaneously.

German authorities opened 123 criminal investigations in five states of the country, including Baixa Saxony and Bavaria. Although it has not been proven that drones are operated from abroad, this hypothesis has not yet been discarded. In a few cases, drone operators were identified.
Currently, the legislation allows the military to divert or make a warning shots at suspicious drones, but slaughter these vehicles remains forbidden even when they have serious risks.
It is suspected that the drones used are of the Russian Orlan-10-10 model, launched from North Sea ships to perform recognition missions on German territory, gathering information and returning to the Kaliningrad region of Russia.
In response, Germany proposed in early 2025 to authorize the military to overthrow suspicious drones near sensitive facilities, seeking to increase national security in the face of these aerial threats.
