Volp: The words that can enter our official vocabulary

by Marcelo Moreira

Imagine that you are jammed in a paperwork of paperwork and suddenly have a “microxono “. Then, get in the car, notice a bubble on the tire, takes the vehicle to the eranion and it applies a “Cordonel “ in the repair. You pay the service, come home, get ready and finally watch that movie of “terrir “ who was crazy to see. The next day, everything starts over.

If you don’t understand any of the highlighted words, rest assured: they are not yet in the Spelling vocabulary of the Portuguese language (Volp). Their inclusion depends on a decision of the lexicographers of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (GLA).

Volp is the official vocabulary that records the correct spelling of the words of the Portuguese language in Brazil. It has normative strength and is updated by the Brazilian Academy of Letters. Unlike dictionaries such as Houaiss or Aurélio, which can register slang and colloquial uses to document the real use of language, VOLP has a normative character: indicates the official written form, its push -ups and the grammatical class, without making sense of meaning.

For a term to be incorporated, it must meet strict criteria, such as stability e frequency of use In different types of text (reports, scientific articles, literary works, technical documents, among others). Expressions that appear only on memes or passenger fads hardly enter VOLP.

In addition to Cordonel, microxono e Terrirlexicographers analyze other terms that have been gaining space in written use. See some examples with support definitions:

  • pejotization (s.f.)– Practice of hiring a worker as a legal entity (PJ)
