The launch ceremony was held at the company’s shipyard in Nagasaki Prefecture, and the construction of a series of ships in the same category is currently underway. The newly named “Tatsuta” is named after the Tatsuta River, a tributary of the Yamato River that flows around Ikoma City, Nara Prefecture.
The name “Tatsuta” is the third ship in Japanese naval history, second only to the gunboats of the former Japanese Navy and the light cruiser commissioned in the 1920s and 1940s.
This ship is the 11th ship of the Mogami class, with a total of 12 planned, and is the penultimate ship in the series. The final ship is scheduled to be launched by the end of 2025. Tatsuta will begin grounds on July 3, 2024, and after fitting and testing voyages for the next 12 months, the Maritime Self-Defense Force is scheduled to be commissioned in 2026.
