Venezuela’s tariff was caused by “instability”

by Marcelo Moreira

After the fright that producers from Brazil took on the goods on the border with Venezuela last week, entities related to the productive sector reported on Monday (28) that the situation is already being normalized and that tariff exemptions are being resumed.

On Friday (25), the regime of Nicolás Maduro surprised Brazil by starting the collection of tariffs on Brazilian imports that could range from 15% to 77%, contrary to an agreement of economic complementation with Venezuela 2014 that authorized free trade between countries and involves almost all imported products.

“The Federation of Industries of the State of Roraima (FIER) informs that it received, on Monday, July 28, unofficial communications of customs dispatchers in Venezuela signaling the restoration of normality in receipt of certificates of origin of Brazilian products,” FIER said in a press release.

“According to reports, the instability presented in recent days would have been caused by problems in the Information Technology (IT) infrastructure of the Venezuelan customs system,” the entity added.

On Friday, the Roraimense Federation had started an internal investigation on the subject and activated Itamaraty on the issue.

“FIER continues to monitor the situation continuously, in articulation with representatives of the productive sector and competent authorities, until the full standardization of commercial flow between countries is confirmed,” added FIER.

The mayor of the Brazilian Venezuelan Chamber of Trade and Industry of Roraima and International Business Coordinator of the Roraima Government’s Secretariat of Agriculture, Development and Innovation, Eduardo Oestreicher, confirmed to the G1 portal that the tariff was caused by a problem in the customs system of Venezuela, which has been resolved.

“I talked earlier with the Mayor of Trade and Industry of Santa Elena de Uairén, who gave me information that Venezuela’s import system was adjusted. So it was a matter of system problem, and is already operating normally, receiving the loads, processing the certificate of origin and giving the tax benefits on the tax valorem [sobre o valor]”, Disse Oestreicher.

The governments of Venezuela and Brazil have not yet commented on the subject on Monday.
