USA remove restriction on the sale of chip technology to China

by Marcelo Moreira

The United States suspended the restrictions imposed in late May on the sale of chip design software to China, according to companies in the sector affected by the measure, which have already begun to restore access to their services to their customers in the Asian country.

Cadence, headquartered in the US, one of the most important companies in the sector, confirmed on Thursday (3) to EFE Agency that the American Trade Department “revoked restrictions on export” imposed at the end of May and announced that it is “in the process of restoration” from access to its software and technology to affected customers.

In another statement, the German company Siemens announced the restoration of “total access” to its software to Chinese customers, to which it again offered “sales and support”.

“For over 150 years, Siemens supports its customers in China. We thank our customers’ patience as we sailed for the rapid changes in the global business scenario and understand the drawbacks it may have caused,” said the German company.

In turn, the American Synopsy issued a similar statement, which emphasized that the revocation of the mentioned sanctions has “immediate effect” and clarified that “continues to evaluate the impact of restrictions (…) on their business, operating results and financial metric”.

US President Donald Trump imposed these restrictions at the end of May in response to the obstacles imposed by China on the export of rare land, essential minerals for sectors such as defense, automotive and, precisely, semiconductors.

The scam exchange put the 90 -day commercial truce at risk for both power in mid -May, but a new round of negotiations in London resulted in a ratified agreement last week.

Through this pact, the US promised to resume exports of software for chip design, ethane and turbines for aircraft, as long as China accelerated the approval of these mineral sale abroad.

The brief prohibition of selling chips design software has marked another step in the siege of Washington to the development of the sector in China, whose government has identified chips as a strategic area for their self -sufficiency ambitions, as it is a technology in which it still depends on third parties.

Software developed by companies such as Cadence and Synopsys are used in the design of all types of processors, from the most advanced – such as those used by Apple and Nvidia – to simple components, such as energy regulatory parts, said the Bloomberg.
