The United States Senate approved on Tuesday (1) the bill proposed by President Donald Trump, which expands tax cuts and reduces investments in social programs.
The vote ended with the score of 50 to 50, and was decided by the vote of the vote of vice president JD Vance, who presides over the house.
The Senate debate lasted more than 26 hours. The proposal, called by the White House of “Big and Beautiful Law”, which has more than 900 pages, provides for the maintenance of 2017 tax benefits for companies and individuals, as well as creating new exemptions for tips, overtime and elderly.
According to estimates from the Congress Budget Office (CBO), the project could increase US public debt by more than $ 3.3 trillion in the coming years. The country’s current debt is over $ 36 trillion.
In addition to tax exemptions, the text directs resources to reinforce border security and expand defense spending. On the other hand, it provides for cuts on programs such as Medicaid (public health system) and food aid.
Measure will still be voted in the Chamber
The project now follows for analysis by the Chamber of Representatives, where Republicans also have a majority. Trump wants to sanction the proposal until July 4, a US Independence Day holiday.
Although most of the Senate and the House is Republican, there are internal differences. Some parliamentarians request even higher cuts, while others criticize the reduction of funds for areas such as health and services in low -income regions.
Of the 53 Republican senators, only three voted against the proposal, while all 47 Democratic senators positioned themselves against.
In the House, approval must be tightened. More conservative groups press for text and moderate parliamentarians show concern about the effects of the package on their states.
