US Secretary says tariffs will come into force on August 1: “Without further extension”

United States Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, said the rates to Brazilian products scheduled to start on August 1 will not be postponed. Products imported from Brazil by USA will be taxed by 50%.

The statement was made on Sunday (27) during an interview of the secretary to the American media.

Lutnick said President Donald Trump will be open to “negotiating and talking to the big economies.” He, however, has considered that such conversations may bump into difficulty.

“Obviously, after August 1, people will still be able to talk to President Trump. He is always willing to listen. Until then, I think the president will talk to many people. If they can make him happy is another question,” he added.

Last Friday (25), President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stated that he is open to negotiating with Trump and said that the president of the United States was induced to believe “in a lie.”

On July 9, US President Donald Trump sent a letter to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, which announces the imposition of a 50% tariff on all Brazilian exports to the US country from August 1.

In the document, Trump says he adopted the measure on the grounds that former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is a defendant in the Supreme Court (STF) for attempted coup d’état, would be suffering political persecution.
