American deputy María Elvira Salazar once again pressured Donald Trump’s government for “immediate” measures against Brazilian Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court (STF).
In X, the Republican Congressman accused Moraes of using the Supreme Court as a “political weapon” to silence opponents, censor Americans, and suspend activities of platforms of freedom of expression.
Salazar’s demonstration comes a few hours after President Donald Trump announced high rates against Brazil for “unfair” business relations and a “witch hunt” against former President Jair Bolsonaro.
“Due, in part, to Brazil’s insidious attacks on the Free Elections and Fundamental Rights of Freedom of Expression of Americans, as of August 1, 2025 we will charge a 50% rate on all Brazilian products in the United States, as well as all sectoral tariffs,” Trump said in a letter directed at Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
With the arguments on display, the American deputy continued: “I appeal to the Trump government to immediately impose a global sanctions magnitsky on Alexandre de Moraes.”
According to Salazar, “the United States need to act now: freeze their assets, revoke their visa and send a clear and blunt message: we will not tolerate authoritarian judges chasing political opposition and attacking freedom.
On Monday, the Republican Congressman had already condemned the Brazilian Minister against Bolsonaro’s actions by claiming that the right-wing politician was the target of “activist judges” trying to silence him.
Salazar’s demonstration was released after President Trump condemned Brazil’s treatment to the former president. “Brazil is acting terrible in the treatment given to former President Jair Bolsonaro. I noticed, just like the world, as they did nothing but chased it, day after day, night after night, month after month, year year! He is not guilty of anything except for fighting the people,” said the White House chief.
