Mexican boxer Julio César Chavez Jr., 39, has been arrested by US immigration agents and is expected to be deported to his home country, where he has an arrest order for an alleged bond with the Sinaloa cartel, a Mexican criminal organization acting on drug trafficking and specialized money laundering.
Chavez Jr., son of the boxer Julio César Chavez, entered the country with a tourist visa in August 2023, won since February last year. In April 2024, Chavez Jr. filed a permanent residence request in the United States after marrying an American citizen, who, according to the second US Immigration Service (ICE), has calls with one of his now deceased children of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the former cartel leader.
In addition, ICE claims that the fighter also made fraudulent statements in his recent request for immigration and has an active arrest warrant in Mexico for alleged participation “in organized crime and trafficking in firearms, ammunition and explosives.”
“Under President Trump, no one is above the law, including world famous athletes. Our message to anyone involved with a US cartel is clear: we will find him and you will face consequences. The days of uncontrolled cartel violence are over,” says the ICE statement.
“This affiliate of the Sinaloa cartel with an active arrest warrant for arms, ammunition and explosives was arrested by Ice. It is shocking that the previous administration signaled this illegal criminal illegal stranger as a threat to public safety, but chose not to prioritize its removal and let it go and go back to our country,” said Tricia McLaughlin, ICE assistant secretary.
In an interview with the news agency The Associated PressChavez Jr.’s lawyer stated that current allegations against his client are “outrageous and simply another headline to terrorize the community.”
