European Parliament International Trade Commission, Bernd Lange, said the text of the agreement between the European Union and Mercosur “is ready” and will be “a wonderful Christmas gift this year.” The treaty has been negotiated 25 years ago and was signed last year in Montevideo, Uruguay. But to begin with valid, it is necessary to be analyzed by the European Union Council, the European Parliament and also by the parliament of each of the 27 countries that belong to the EU.
France opposes the agreement. Due to French agricultural lobby, politicians in the country and President Emmanuel Macron try to use a blockage clause so that final approval does not happen. However, with the current world commercial scenario, Europeans, including the French, are rethinking their positions.
European Union and Mercosur unite over 700 million consumers and together have a $ 22 trillion Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Currently, the European Union is the second largest commercial partner in Brazil, behind only China.
