United States President Donald Trump threatened on Monday (7) to apply an additional 10% tariff on products imported from countries that support the BRICS. The statement was published on its profile on the Truth Social network, amid the block meeting, which takes place in Rio de Janeiro.
“Any country that alienates the BRICS anti -American policies will be taxed with an extra 10%tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy,” Trump said on the social network.
BRICS Defends Open Trade
Trump’s statement contrasts with the official position of BRICS. On Sunday (6), Block leaders released a statement criticizing protectionist measures and advocating global trade based on multilateral rules.
“We reiterate our support for a multilateral trade system based on rules, open, transparent, fair, inclusive, equitable, non -discriminatory and consensual, with the WTO in its nucleus,” says the text.
BRICS is made up of 11 nations that are Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Iran, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Egypt and Ethiopia. In addition to these official members, the group maintains partnerships with ten other nations such as Cuba, Nigeria, Vietnam and Kazakhstan.
