US President Donald Trump threatened to impose a rate of “30% or 35%” on Japan if a trade agreement between the two countries is not reached until next Wednesday. “We deal with Japan. I am not sure if we will make a deal. I doubt it,” said reporters aboard Air Force One on Tuesday. “They and others are so spoiled that they have stolen for 30, 40 years that it is very difficult for them to make a deal.”
On Monday (30), Trump accused Japan of refusing to buy American rice in a post In the social truth. “They do not accept our rice, and yet they have a huge scarcity of rice. In other words, we will send them only a letter and love to have them as business partners for many years,” he wrote.
The possible new tariff is greater than the 24% imposed by Trump to Tokyo on the so -called “Liberation Day,” his great announcement of global tariffs made on April 2.
A week later, rates on most US business partners, including Japan, were reduced to 10% for 90 days, a “pause” to give countries time to negotiate agreements with Washington. The deadline expires on July 9, and Trump has already stated that he does not intend to extend it.
“We are aware of what President Trump said, but we do not comment on all the observations made by US government officials,” said country’s chief secretary Kazuhiko Aoki, in an interview on Wednesday, according to BBC.
On Tuesday, Japan’s chief secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi had declared that it would not make concessions that could harm farmers from his country to reach an agreement with the US.
