United States President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Israel agreed with the necessary terms to accept a 60-day ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
According to Trump, the understanding was reached after a “long and productive” meeting among its Israeli representatives and authorities. The announcement takes place amid the expectation of a new meeting between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, scheduled to take place next week in Washington.
Trump explained that during this period of temporary ceasefire, there will be joint efforts to seek the definitive end of war.
“Israel agreed with the necessary conditions to accept the 60-day ceasefire, during which we will work with all parts to end the war. The Caarians and Egyptians, who have been hard to bring peace, will deliver this final proposal (to Hamas),” Trump wrote in the Truth Social Network.
The American leader emphasized that now the decision is in the hands of Hamas, warning that the opportunity will not be repeated.
“I hope, for the sake of the Middle East, that Hamas accepts this agreement, because there will be no better proposal – it will only get worse,” concluded the president.
Qatar and Egypt have acted as regional mediators and, according to Trump, must deliver the final proposal to the Palestinian terrorist group.
Hours before this announcement, Trump had already declared that he intended to be “very firm” with Benjamin Netanyahu for the Premier to accept peace. Despite the seemingly critical tone, Trump acknowledged that both he and Netanyahu want the end of the conflict: “Bibi wants to finish the war. I also want it to end. But it must be done intelligently,” he warned.
According to the newspaper Times of IsraelArab mediators are currently trying to resume negotiations between Israel and Hamas in Cairo, Egypt, seeking to overcome the impasses that still have the signing of the definitive peace agreement. Temporary ceasefire is expected to serve as the basis for new discussions aimed at a longer lasting solution.
