United States President Donald Trump said on Wednesday being willing to reduce the rates with which he threatened his business partners from August if they commit to eliminating barriers to American imports.
“I will always yield tariff points if you can get the main countries to open their markets to the United States. Another great power of tariffs. Without them, it would be impossible to make countries open,” Trump wrote on his own social network, Truth Social.
The American ruler, who since his return to the White House has intensified his tariff war and announced rates of 19% to 50% to more than a dozen nations, including Brazil – taxed with the highest percentage so far – insisted: “Always, zero tariffs for the United States !!!”
Trump also celebrated that, due to two trade agreements with Indonesia and Japan, they completely opened “their markets for the first time, in a relevant victory for companies in the three countries, which will” make a fortune, “he said.
“I will only reduce rates if a country agrees to open its market. If not, much higher rates!” He promised, at the end of a series of messages where he highlighted the magnitude of the pacts announced on Tuesday with Jakarta and Tokyo, which will impose rates of 19% and 15% respectively, a reduction in the initial threat of 32% and 25%.
Trump announced and then temporarily suspended what he calls “reciprocal” tariffs to his partners, with whom he seeks to reduce the “large commercial deficit” of the US with his correspondents.
Throughout the tariff truce that would originally end on July 9 and then extended until August 1, the Republican government reached pacts with six countries: United Kingdom, China, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia and Philippines.
As no further agreements, Trump sent letters notifying rates of between 20% and 50% to dozens of countries, including Brazil, reached at the highest rate, if they do not feel at the negotiating table.
