United States President Donald Trump said on Friday (25) that the announcement of his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, about his country’s intention to officially recognize a Palestinian state “doesn’t matter” and that “it will not change anything” about the situation in the Middle East.
“(Macron) It’s a different guy. It’s a good face. It’s a team player, basically. But here’s the good news: what he says doesn’t matter. It won’t change anything,” Trump told journalists gathered in the White House garden just before his departure to Scotland.
“He made a statement. His statement has no weight. He is very good. I like him, but that statement does not convince me,” the Republican added about it.
Macron announced on Thursday (24) that France will recognize the Palestinian state in a letter to the president of the Palestinian National Authority (ANP), Mahmoud Abbas, and explained that he will officialize this recognition at the UN General Assembly next September.
Shortly thereafter, the Trump government expressed its striking rejection of the decision by the mouth of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“This irresponsible decision only serves the advertising of Hamas and represents a setback for peace. It is a slap in the face of the victims of October 7,” Rubio wrote in his official account on social network X.
