Trump Media, a company by US President Donald Trump, and the Rumble video platform has asked the US court that the US government evaluate the application of sanctions against the Supreme Court (STF) Minister Alexandre de Moraes, based on allegations of human rights violations.
The request was filed with the Federal Court of Florida, in a lawsuit began in February by the two companies. In the document, the companies request that the lawsuit to be forwarded to the US State Department for the conduct of Moraes – and possibly other STF ministers – to be analyzed in the light of Global Magnitsky law, which provides for punishment to foreigners involved in corruption or serious human rights abuse.
Sanctions provided by American legislation are the blockade of assets, the suspension of visas and the imposition of diplomatic restrictions. Despite mentioning the performance of other magistrates of the Brazilian Court, companies do not indicate names other than Moraes.
It is important to highlight that the Federal Supreme Court Minister recently had his American visa and his canceled allies.
It will now be up to the American court to decide whether the case will be officially referred to the State Department. If the request is accepted, the US government may evaluate if there is legal basis to impose sanctions on the Brazilian minister.
Understand the context
The action brought by Rumble and Trump Media disputes decisions made by Alexandre de Moraes related to the suspension of profiles and content on social networks, including accounts of supporters of President Donald Trump. Companies argue that these measures violate principles of freedom of expression and impact US citizens, which would justify US government’s performance.
