United States President Donald Trump used social networks on Monday (7) to defend Jair Bolsonaro and criticize the Brazilian government. He accused the country’s authorities of conducting a “witch hunt” against the former president and promised to closely follow what he called political persecution.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that Brazil is treating Bolsonaro unfairly. “They did nothing but go after him, day after day, night after night,” he wrote. For the US commander, Bolsonaro has not committed crimes: “He is not guilty of anything except for fighting for the people.”
Not directly mentioning the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Trump criticized the lawsuits that investigate Bolsonaro for a coup attempt after defeat in the 2022 elections. In the Republican’s view, the former president’s political future is the voters, not justice. “The only judgment that should happen is the judgment by the voters of Brazil-it is called election,” he said.
Trump also warned. According to him, the Brazilian population will not accept what they called abuse of power. “The great people of Brazil will not tolerate what they are doing with their former president,” he said. At the end of the publication, he asked, “Leave Bolsonaro alone.”
Bolsonaro thanks Trump
Following Donald Trump’s publication in his defense, Jair Bolsonaro publicly thanked the president of the United States and again criticized investigations in Brazil. In his social networks, he classified the process he faces in the Supreme Court as “legal aberration” and accused Brazilian authorities of promoting political persecution.
“I receive President Donald Trump’s grade with great joy,” Bolsonaro wrote, remembering the close relationship he kept with the Republican during his government. According to him, both defended “the interests of our peoples and the freedom of all” while they were in power.
Commenting on the allegations he faces in the Supreme Court, Bolsonaro said he lives a lawfare case – when legal proceedings are used as a political weapon. “This process to which I respond is a legal aberration, clear political persecution, already perceived by all of common sense,” he said.
The former president also compared his situation to Trump, who faces investigations in the United States. “You have gone through something similar. It was relentlessly persecuted, but won for the good of the United States and other democracies,” Bolsonaro said.
Finally, he thanked his support and highlighted what he called the global struggle for freedom. “His struggle for peace, justice and ecological freedom throughout the planet. Thank you for existing and setting us an example of faith and resilience,” he concluded.
Bolsonaro is a defendant in the Supreme Court, accused of articulating an attempt to coup after losing the 2022 elections. He denies the accusations and claims to be the victim of political persecution.

Lula responds Trump
President Lula responded to Donald Trump’s statements, who had used social networks to defend Jair Bolsonaro. Without directly quoting the president of the United States, Lula stressed that the defense of democracy in Brazil is only for Brazilians and rejected any kind of external intervention.
“The defense of democracy in Brazil is a topic that competes to Brazilians. We are a sovereign country. We do not accept interference or guardianship of anyone,” Lula said in a social network. He also pointed out that the country has solid and independent institutions. “No one is above the law, especially those who underlie freedom and the rule of law,” he wrote.
