Trump designates US agencies to monitor Brazil

by Marcelo Moreira

United States President Donald Trump has mobilized a series of government agencies to monitor compliance with measures imposed on Brazil, after signing a decree officializing the new collection of 50% on imports from the country, which is expected to take effect in the coming days.

In the document, released on the White House website on Wednesday (30), Trump designates the State Department, led by Marco Rubio, to “monitor and recommend” new actions regarding the application of tariffs to Brazil.

“The Secretary of State should regularly monitor and consult any high official that the Secretary of State considers appropriate about the situation involving the Government of Brazil,” says the decree.

Other folders involved with this inspection are the Treasury, Commerce Department, the United States Commercial Representative, the President’s assistant to National Security Affairs, the President’s assistant to economic policy, the president of the president and senior advisor to trade and manufacturing and the internal security department.

These agencies were designated by Trump to evaluate the relationship with the Brazilian government and, if necessary, recommend additional measures.

The president says in the document that he must be informed by these sectors of the Administration “if this action is not effective to resolve the emergence declared in this order or if the Government of Brazil retaliates against the US in response to actions taken in this order or any subsequent order issued to deal with this emergency.”

On Wednesday, the Republican agent was based on the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Law (IEEPA) to declare a national emergency involving Brazil. In the executive order, Trump instructed Rubio to submit recurring reports to the US Congress on the declared national emergency.

Decree was published on the same day of the announcement of sanctions against Moraes

Hours earlier on Wednesday, the Trump administration announced the inclusion of Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court (STF) on the list of the US Global Magnitsky Law.

“Alexandre de Moraes assumed the responsibility of being a judge and jury in a hunting for illegal witches against American and Brazilian citizens and companies,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in the statement.

On the 18th, Donald Trump’s government had already revoked the magistrate’s visa, “allies” in the Supreme Court and his family. At the time, Rubio informed that he had ordered the application of the measure with the same arguments exposed by Bessent.

“President Trump has made it clear that his government will be responsible for censorship of protected expression in the United States. Minister Alexandre de Moraes’s political witches of the Supreme Court against Jair Bolsonaro has created such a comprehensive persecution and censorship complex that not only violates Brazilians’ basic rights, but also extends beyond the borders of Brazil, reaching the Americans on the 18th.
