In the final stretch of the deadline for new commercial negotiations-which ends on August 1-US President Donald Trump said he will only reduce tariffs if other countries open their markets for US products. The comment was made on his social network, Truth Social, this Wednesday (23).
In another publication on the same social network, Trump stated that he closed agreements with Japan, Philippines and Indonesia.
According to the Republican, the three Asian countries agreed to make commercial barriers more flexible for United States products. In the case of Japan, Trump stated that there will be opening for imports of cars, SUVs, trucks and agricultural products such as rice, item historically protected by the Japanese authorities.
“For the first time, Japan is opening its market for American vehicles and even agriculture, which has always been denied. This was only possible thanks to the strategic use of tariffs,” Trump wrote.
In addition to commercial opening, the president also announced an investment package of $ 550 billion from Japan, with 90% of the amount returning in profits to the US. According to him, part of this amount will be intended for the purchase of US military equipment.
Trump defended tariff policy as a negotiating tool. He said that without the rates, “it would be impossible to force countries to open” and assured that he will keep rates high if no counterparts. “I will always give up the rates if we get real access to the markets. Otherwise, the rates will be even higher,” he said.
