Trump asks Washington Commanders to abandon name Woke

by Marcelo Moreira

United States President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the football team Washington Commanders should “immediately” recover the original name of Redskins (red skin), which was changed by 2020 due to alleged racist connotations in relation to the native American population.

“Washington ‘whatever’ they should immediately move their name to Washington Redskins. There is a big cry for that,” the US president wrote on his own social network, the social Truth.

Trump insisted that “the same goes for the Cleveland Indians, one of the six original baseball teams with a historic past.” In 2021, this emblematic team was known as Cleveland Guardians, also in response to pressure from social justice movements in the country.

“Our great indigenous people wishes it to happen. Their inheritance and prestige are being systematically taken from them. The times are different now than three or four years ago. We are a country of passion and common sense,” warned the American president, with a message to the owners of these teams: “Do this !!!”.

In December 2020, the US capital’s football team abandoned the name Redskins (reference to the red skin of the Native American Indians), as well as its logo that showed the head with feathers of an indigenous man on the side of the team’s helmet, which now displays a capital W in capital letters.
