United States President Donald Trump said on Monday that he should apply a general rate between 15% and 20% in imports of countries that do not reach an agreement with his government by Friday (1), when the deadline for these conversations ends.
“For the world, I would say it will be somewhere in the 15% range of 20% … I just want to be kind,” Trump told Journalists in Turnberry, Scotland, meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Stmerer.
“I would say that in the 15% to 20% range, probably one of these two numbers,” Trump added, according to CNBC.
“Let’s establish a tariff essentially for the rest of the world, and that’s what they will pay if they want to do business in the United States because you can’t sit down and make 200 agreements,” the US president said.
If it is realized, the maximum tariff informed by Trump would be much smaller than the 50% surcharge in the American importation of Brazilian products promised to August 1, according to a letter sent by the Republican to Lula management on the last day 9.
The US president did not clarify on Monday if there will be exceptions, but on Friday (25) Bloomberg reported that Trump management is preparing an emergency statement as a new legal basis to impose tariffs on Brazil.
This statement was being evaluated as necessary to impose 50% rate on I imports from Brazil threatened by Trump, as the United States has commercial surplus with the South American country, sources heard by Bloomberg said.
For now, few governments have closed agreements with the United States since the so -called Liberation Day on April 2, when the Republican announced surcharge on US purchases of most countries and territories in the world. In recent days, Trump has announced appointments with Japan (15%), Philippines, Indonesia (both with 19%) and European Union (15%).
