Former United States President Donald Trump announced on Thursday the imposition of 35% tariffs on imported products from Canada. The measure, according to him, comes into force on August 1st.
The decision was communicated through a letter sent to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Meatary, and published on Truth Social Social Network, Trump’s own platform. In the text, he claims that the measure is a response to alleged retaliatory tariffs applied by Ottawa, after Washington pressures the country to reinforce border safety to curb fentanyl trafficking.
Trump also threatened to adopt additional 35% rates if the Canadian government reacts with new sanctions on US products.
Canada is just one of the recent targets of the former Republican President’s tariff policy. Since Monday (7), Trump has imposed commercial sanctions against countries such as Indonesia, Algeria, Iraq and Brazil, with the highest tariff post to 50%. In a statement, he warned that any attempt to retaliate by the Brazilian government will result in an increase equivalent to the applied fare.
