United States President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he will impose a 25% tariff from August 1 on India products, as well as a “fine” as a result of Russia’s energy purchase by Asian country.
“Although India is our ally, over the years we have done relatively few businesses with them because their tariffs are very high, among the highest in the world, and they have the most rigorous and competitive non -monetary barriers in any country,” the president wrote on his own social network, Truth Social.
Trump mentioned the country’s business relationship with Russia, saying that the Indian government “has always bought the vast majority of Russia’s military equipment, and is Russia’s largest energy buyer, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to stop the killing in Ukraine.”
“All this is not good!” The Republican continued, who added that so, from August, India will pay a 25%tariff, citing trade relations with Moscow, as well as a “fine”.
“India, therefore, will pay a 25% tariff plus a fine mentioned above, starting from August 1,” he added. In another publication on Truth Social, Trump stressed that the US has “a huge commercial deficit with India.”
The announcement of the US president occurs weeks after assured that his government was close to reaching a tariff pact with New Delhi, and amid frustrations for what the Republican sees as a “insufficient commitment” of the Russian dictator, Vladimir Putin, to advance negotiations to end the conflict in Ukraine.
Since his return to the White House in January, Trump has intensified the trade war with former partners, which has imposed 15% to 50% rates, as is the case of Brazil, which, according to him, will come into force on August 1, when the truce he granted his counterparts to negotiate new rates ended.
