The Department of Defense of the United States is conducting tests with drones in Alaska as part of an effort to promote innovation in the electronic war and overcome regulatory and technological barriers.
The initiative, led by the Defense Innovation Unit (diu), aims to offer companies, especially to smaller ones, real opportunities to test autonomous systems in simulated hostile environments. Projects such as Gi and the Long-Range Strike Group have been created to accelerate the integration of new technologies in the armed forces and facilitate the test process, often hindered by the requests of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and operational limitations in military bases.
Initially, Ukraine was considered an ideal test field due to its practical experience in combat with drones. However, logistical obstacles and diplomatic tensions prevented the formal support of the United States from these operations. Some well -financed American startups have however managed to test equipment on the Ukrainian front line. Without practicable alternatives, Alaska has been chosen as a national solution, offering more favorable conditions in airspace and less interference, as well as allowing more flexible tests.
During the exercises conducted by the 11th battalion special operations, it emerged that many of the electronic war systems used by the US are obsolete, with over twenty years of use and ineffective against modern threats. However, the team managed to improve performance, especially in the interference scenarios of the GNSS signals.
However, this progress does not hide the technological delay compared to powers such as China and Russia, which have invested more aggressively in accessible and effective solutions for the battlefield.
