Slovenia said on Thursday (31) that it will promote a weapon embargo against Israel due to the war in the Gaza strip against the terrorist group Hamas, which led the Israeli government to react with irony.
“Slovenia is the first European country to prohibit imports, exports and traffic of weapons and to Israel,” the Slovenian government said in a statement, reported by the newspaper The Times of Israel.
Slovenia authorities argued that people “are dying [na Faixa de Gaza] because humanitarian aid is systematically denied to them ”and that the country is the first of the European Union (EU) to promote a weapon embargo against Israel – a decision that made separately from the bloc because it would be“ unable to adopt concrete measures ”due to“ internal and disunishment and disunity ”.
A source from the Israeli government mocked Slovenia’s statement in an interview with Ynet. “We do not shop in Slovenia’s defense area. We do not buy even a pin of them. They simply decided on an embargo to attract media attention, because they can do so, but it is completely meaningless,” he said.
In 2024, Slovenia recognized the Palestinian state and this month declared persona non grata two ministers of Israel, Itamar Ben-Gvir (national security) and Bezalel Smotrich (finance), preventing them from entering the country.
