by Marcelo Moreira

Searches for missing Texas in the southern United States entered the 5th day on Tuesday (8), after the floods that hit the state last weekend. Until the moment of publication of this article, the authorities confirmed 104 deaths, including 28 children, with the possibility of increasing number in the coming days.

Of the total victims, 25 children were at Camp Mystic, a nearly 100 -year -old Christian camp on the banks of the Guadalupe River, which had an increase of almost nine meters at water level. The site, located in the city of Kerrville, the most affected by the disaster, is traditional and crowded in the region, and members of the US elite have already stayed at the premises, such as former first lady Laura Bush.

In a press release, the Texas senator said he recently visited the camp, and described the situation as a “war scenario”, noting to be a miracle that no other child died. At least 750 young people were participating in the activities at the time of floods.

Ten girls and a Mystic advisor are still sought by the rescue teams, and parents of missing children joined the search. The local government mobilized more than 750,000 agents to operate in operations.

The US press has criticized the National Meteorology Service, saying that the agency did not issue alerts in time and would have underestimated the thunderstorms. On the other hand, the US internal security department countered the comments, claiming that the warnings were issued at “timely” moments, with the first being released at 4am Thursday (3), about two hours before the sudden Guadalupe rise.

US President Donald Trump has also been criticized about the possibility of budget cuts of the National Meteorology Service, which could have affected the work. Trump intends to visit Texas this Friday (11).
